Lackadaisical is an adjective that is used to describe someone or something that is lacking in enthusiasm or determination, carelessly lazy, or lacking life, spirit or zest.

Lackadaisical Origin

Quite frankly, the origin of this word is nothing less than complicated. While most people think it stems from an archaic use of the word ‘lackaday’ to express regret, and ‘lackadaisy’ which an expression of languor – its true origins can be traced back further.

Matter of fact the word ‘lackaday’ was initially a phrase that was first used by Shakespeare in Romeo and Juliet as ‘alack a day’ before gradually migrating into a single word.

Later on, it somehow got extended and made slightly fanciful with ‘lackadaisy’ or ‘lack-a-daisy’ – but the meaning was largely subjective until the novelist Lawrence stone finally turned into an adjective in a sentence from his book A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy (1978), “Would to Heaven! my dear Eugenius, thou hadst passed by, and beheld me sitting in my black coat, and in my lack-adaysical manner.”

From there, it was just a small hop, skip and jump to its newfound form ‘lackadaisical’.

Lackadaisical Usage

Despite its length and slight complexity, lackadaisical is a word that still enjoys quite a bit of usage.

His lackadaisical approach to the assigned project ended up annoying his bosses.
When the heat wave struck, the entire class was in such a lackadaisical mood that the teacher decided to just let them off early.

On the whole, lackadaisical goes beyond simply lacking enthusiasm and determination in its usage. Nowadays, it is most often used to imply a carefree indifference that is characterized by halfhearted efforts.

Lackadaisical Synonyms and Antonyms
